For years, I carried a deep, suffocating pain that I didn’t fully understand and at the same time I knew it was related to the civil war in my country (the Haitian Révolution/civil war). This pain was generational, stretching back seven generations, a burden passed down through the lineage of my ancestors. It was as if I was born with this heavy load, a spiritual inheritance of wounds that refused to heal. But as I navigated through this overwhelming darkness, I discovered a transformative force that brought me the healing I desperately needed: the divine love of God.
Visualize Divine Love
During my most difficult moments, I realized that the only way to truly heal was to allow God’s love to penetrate the very depths of my soul. This wasn’t just a passive belief—it became an active, visual practice. Whenever the pain surged, threatening to consume me, I would close my eyes and envision a powerful force of divine love piercing through my body. This love wasn’t just a vague concept but a warm, real, and overwhelming. It was a force that cut through the layers of generational pain, offering me a sense of well-being and peace that I had never known before.
Break Generational Chains with God’s Love
As I continued to visualize this divine love, I felt the heavy chains of my ancestors’ sins and suffering begin to break. The Bible teaches us in Exodus 34:7 that the sins of the fathers can be visited upon the children to the third and fourth generations, but I also found comfort in 1 Peter 5:10, which reminds us that “the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” This promise became my anchor, a reminder that God’s love is stronger than any generational curse, more powerful than any inherited pain.

Rewrite your Narrative Through the Lens of Love
In those moments of intense suffering, I chose to see beyond the pain. I began to focus on the humanity of those who came before me, to see their struggles not as a burden but as part of a larger story of redemption. By projecting God’s love onto these wounds, I was able to rewrite my narrative, to see the goodness in even the smallest moments of my family’s difficult history. It was through this perspective that I began to heal, to release the trauma that had held me captive for so long.

The Role of Creativity in Healing
This journey wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. Without the lens of love, I would have continued to relive the trauma every day, trapped in a cycle of despair. But as I embraced God’s love, I found the strength to reclaim my story. I began writing poetry and love stories set against the backdrop of my country’s civil war, focusing on characters from opposing sides who found love in the midst of chaos. Through these creative expressions, I was able to emphasize the values of Christ—love, forgiveness, and humanity—over the destruction that once defined my narrative.
