For years, I carried an unbearable emotional and spiritual pain in my body. This pain was rooted in the history of the Haitian civil war, a conflict that left deep scars on my soul. I didn’t know how to navigate through these trials, and the weight of the past seemed too heavy to bear. But then, something incredible happened—something I can only describe as a divine download. God revealed to me that the only way to transform my pain into love was to choose forgiveness, to release every person who had caused harm, and to embrace the power of grace.
The Power of Choosing Forgiveness
At first, this revelation felt counterintuitive. How could I possibly forgive when the wounds were so deep? Yet, I realized that holding onto bitterness was only prolonging my suffering. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” This verse became my guide, reminding me that forgiveness is not just a choice but a commandment that leads to true freedom.
When I chose to forgive, something miraculous happened—the pain that had lodged itself in my body for so long began to dissipate. It was as if the chains of suffering were broken, and I could finally breathe again. Forgiveness is not about condoning the actions that caused harm, but about releasing the hold that those actions have over us and choosing love. It’s about reclaiming our power and choosing love over hate, peace over turmoil.

Transform Pain into Love
As I continued on this journey, I realized that the conflict between the Haitian and French people had left a lasting impact on both sides. The dispute had caused immense pain, but it also presented an opportunity for healing. The Bible speaks of reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:18, which says, “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.” I knew that if I wanted to heal, I needed to embrace this ministry of reconciliation, to choose love between our peoples instead of allowing the pain to perpetuate.
Choosing love doesn’t mean ignoring the past, but it means acknowledging it and choosing to move forward with a heart full of grace. The transformation I experienced was profound—I went from being weighed down by the burdens of history to feeling light and free. This freedom came from the realization that love is stronger than hate, and that forgiveness is the key to unlocking that love.

Choose forgiveness daily
This journey has taught me that forgiveness is a daily choice. It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it. The moment I chose to forgive, the pain left my body, and I was able to step into a new chapter of my life—a chapter filled with hope, peace, and a deep sense of purpose. Forgiveness allowed me to see the humanity in others, even those who had caused harm, and it enabled me to walk in the footsteps of Christ.
I encourage you to take this step as well. If you are carrying the weight of past hurts, know that forgiveness is the path to freedom. In the words of Colossians 3:13, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” This is your call to action: choose forgiveness, and watch as God transforms your pain into a powerful testimony of love.
