This summer has been a journey of deep pain and profound healing. For years, I felt suffocated by a pain I couldn’t fully understand, a pain that seemed to be rooted in something much deeper than my own experiences. Through a healing program with my online Catholic church, I’ve begun to uncover the truth: this pain is generational, passed down through seven generations of my family.
The Weight of Generational Sin
I’ve learned that the sins of our ancestors, unrepented and unresolved, continue to hurt us today. Sin doesn’t just impact the sinner; its consequences can ripple through multiple generations. As Exodus 34:7 reminds us, God “maintains love to thousands, and forgives wickedness, rebellion, and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.” When we fail to heal from these sins, they create openings for evil to enter our lives, compounding our pain.
For years, I felt as though I was being stabbed, as if I was carrying a heavy spiritual burden that wasn’t entirely mine. This burden, I realized, was a result of unrepented sins, both mine and those of my ancestors. Our unholy dealings have left us with spiritual baggage that weighs us down, making it difficult to move forward.
Discover the Source of Your Pain
It wasn’t until I began researching my family tree and the history of my country that I truly understood the extent of this burden. The civil war that tore through my country generations ago affected my family personally, leaving wounds that were never healed.

Rewrite your Story with Radical Love
It may seem counterintuitive, but the only way I managed to get through this painful period in my country’s history was by rewriting it with love. It’s essential to focus on the humanity of people and to see goodness, even when it’s present in the smallest amounts, in order to truly heal. What really helped me was rewriting my story with an emphasis on love and the humanity of those involved. Without this perspective, I felt as if I was reliving the trauma every day.
As discussed in this article, I used my creativity to reclaim my power. I began writing poetry and love stories set against the backdrop of my country’s civil war, featuring protagonists from opposing sides who fall in love and are living peacefully. By doing this, I took control of my historical narrative, by highlighting Christ’s values in their life instead of focusing on destruction. From that moment, I started to feel better and freer. Even if this is a fictional rewriting it helps for healing.
Like always... we Find Freedom in Christ’s Love
Since making this shift, I’ve felt a profound change within myself. The suffocating pain has started to lift, and I’ve begun to feel a sense of freedom and peace that I never thought possible. Through the power of Christ and the creative expression He has given me, I’m finally able to heal. Jesus said in John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” This freedom is now mine, and it can be yours too.
